The Legendary Gimbal Tofu “Lumayan” Semarang

Gimbal tofu is one of the popular dishes in Semarang City. This culinary delight has been around since the colonial era. It consists of diced-cut fried tofu, cabbages, and sprinkled fried onion. The main ingredient here is gimbal, starchy fried shrimps in a wide size. The last touch is rice or rice cake.

Gimbal tofu is a must food to try when you are in Semarang City. You can find any food stalls in every corner in Semarang selling gimbal tofu starting from street food stalls to great restaurants.

One of the most popular food stalls is Tahu Gimbal Lumayan Pak Man. This stall is also known as Tahu Gimbal Plampitan. It has been around since the 1950s and now it is managed by the second generation.

The name Plampitan is adapted from the location of the stall in Plampitan Street, Semarang—near Plampitan Hotel. The location is very strategic since it is located downtown and only 5 minutes from Simpang Lima. You can also walk from China Town Semarang.

Although this stall looks small (can accommodate 10 people), it still becomes the most favorite gimbal tofu in Semarang. So, it is no wonder that you must be in a queue line for a long time to eat.

Warung Lumayan Pak Man opens every day at 11 AM until it is out of stock. You better go there in the afternoon or you may come approaching the opening time.

The specialty of gimbal tofu in this stall is the huge portion of gimbal tofu with a wide-size shrimp gimbal. Surely, you will be so satisfied and full by eating a portion of gimbal tofu here. The price is IDR 22.000 per serving without egg and it is IDR 30.000 for a serving of complete gimbal tofu. (Nico)
