LASEM BATIK

In the book Batik: Warisan Adiluhung Nusantara, Musman Asti and Ambar B. Arini explain that Lasem batik is a type of coastal batik that has its own characteristics. This particularity is the result of acculturation of Chinese and Javanese culture. At first the Chinese settled mostly on the northern coast of the island of Java. This happens because the major ports of the island of Java are all located along the north coast of Java.

Lasem culturalist, Edi Winarno, stated that Lasem's batik had existed since the Majapahit era. The Majapahit style can be found from the names of Majapahit in Lasem batik motifs, such as kendoro kendiri, kawung, and grinsing motifs. Until now, batik craftsmen still know the term sogan Majapahit, which is the dominant color of brown. Then Lasem batik developed with the arrival of the Chinese when the Ming Dynasty fleet, under the leadership of Admiral Cheng Ho, docked near Lasem in 1413 AD.
