Es Conglik, Unique And Legendary From Semarang City

When asked about Semarang’s culinary, the response must be tahu gimbal, lumpia, pisang penyet, or anything else. But have you ever heard of Es Puter Conglik? Surely not, don’t you?

Culinary in the form of traditional ice cream has a distinct flavor that melts in the mouth. Unlike the ice puter that is commonly offered, the Es Puter Congklik has an addictive flavour that is not comparable to today’s ice cream.

The key is in the ice cream's basic ingredients, which use real ingredients with no additional flavors. There are four flavors available: durian, young coconut, avocado, and chocolate. If you wish to taste it in a bowl of Es Puter Congklik, you may pick two of the four flavours.

Portions are fairly huge, and there is a variety of toppings available, including big kolang-kaling, siwalan, white bread, and jelly.

For the durian flavor variant, the original and ripe durian fruit topping will be added. Of course, it's ideal for people who are "craving" durian despite the fact that it's not durian season, huh?

The sweet taste combined with the somewhat rough texture of es puter makes the flavor combination addictive.

Actually, Es Puter Congklik has been aaround since 1982 and now has been passed down to the second generation (Ms. Tri). Mr. Sukimin (her grandfather) first sold it in Chinatown area using a small cart.

The name Conglik means kacung cilik (little lackey) or pembantu kecil (little helper) in Indonesian. The recipe and how to prepare it were formerly taught directly by the Dutch, and the recipe has been preserved to this day.

The manufacturing process is still very traditional in that it uses a thermos filled with ice cream and then salt is added on the outside of the thermos to form a frozen ice cream texture.

No wonder it tastes different from other es puter usually sold by peddler.

Those who are interested can go directly to the spot, which is located on Jalan Ahmad Dahlan No. 11, Semarang, in front of Tlogorejo Hospital Semarang.

A portion of Es Puter Congklik costs between Rp. 20,000 to Rp. 30,000 each serving, depending on the topping and flavor variant.

The stall is open from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m., and it is also open on big festivals and national holidays. Don't be shocked if a large number of visitors come to try this Conglik ice puter even if it's raining or at night.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, as it is today, it is still open and has even prepared health protocols such as providing a hand washing place or hand sanitizer on every table. (Nico)
