Sate Srepeh – Typical Food From Rembang
Rembang Regency has culinary delights which tend to be spicy. Let’s say lontong tuyuhan with its spicy-savory yellow soup. Other than lontong tuyuhan, sate srepeh is also worth a try as a breakfast or lunch menu.
Sate srepeh can be found in Rembang precisely in Sumberejo Village. You will see a homely food stall in a residential area that used to be a lot of people selling sate srepeh, especially in the morning.
Just like any other satay, sate srepeh is served with peanut sauce which is more like the sauce in ‘tahu campur’. Having the sauce prepared, the seller takes two packs of rice wrapped in teak leaves. Then, the rice is doused with soup of ‘sayur lodeh’ with tofu, peanut sauce, and chicken meat or offal.
At a glance, sate srepeh just looks like common chicken satay. Yet, the seasoning between both satays is quite different. While chicken satay is served with thick peanut sauce, sliced chilly and shallot, plus rice cake or rice, the seasoning of sate srepeh is coconut-milk-based. The soup is reddish because it is made of red chilies, salt, and flavorings.
A combination of chicken meat or offal with rice and ‘sayur lodeh’ gives a fresh and spicy sensation. The savory taste of peanut sauced and coconut milk soup makes it more addictive. This is the reason why sate srepeh becomes a favorite dish in Rembang especially when people come back to their hometown in Eid moment.
