PLUMPUNGAN INSCRIPTION

Located at Plumpungan Hamlet, Kauman Kidul Village, Sidorejo Sub-District, Plumpungan Inscription is in the form of andesite stone with a length of 170 cm, a width of 160 cm, a diameter of 5 m, and a weight of 20 tons. Plumpungan Inscription is written in the Old Javanese alphabet and Sanskrit and is believed to be the embryo of the birth of Salatiga in the year 750. On the inscription, it is written: 'Srir Astu Swasti Prajabhyah', which means 'Wish a happy and peaceful people'.

The forerunner of Salatiga's birth is written in a large andesite type stone measuring 170 cm long, 160 cm broad, and with a 5-meter circular line, known as the Plumungan inscription. Salatiga, according to an inscription at Plumungan Hamlet, Kauman Kidul Village, Sidorejo District, has existed since 750 AD, when it was part of the Perdikan region.

Dr. J. G. de Casparis, a historian and epigraph expert, transferred the whole manuscript, which was improved further by Prof. Dr. R. Ng Poerbatjaraka. The Plumungan inscription contains legal provisions regarding the status of the fief or autonomous land for an area that was then called Hampra, which is now called Salatiga. The fief giving was a special thing at that time by a king and not every area of power could be made a fief area.

Perdikan refers to a region inside a kingdom that is exempt from paying taxes or tribute due to particular qualities. The premise for granting the fief area was granted to a deserving hamlet or territory to a king. The inscription, which is assumed to have been written on Friday, July 24, 750 AD, was written in the ancient Javanese language by a Citraleka, who is now known as a writer or poet, and was assisted by several priests or rishis: "Srir Astu Swasti Prajabyah," which means "Good luck, happy people."

Historians believe that the people of Hampra obeyed Monarch Bhanu, a noble king who cared much for his people and whose territory included the districts of Salatiga, Semarang, Ambarawa, and Boyolali. The inscription stipulation is the starting point for formally establishing the Hampra region as a Perdikan territory, and it is documented in the Plumungan inscription. The anniversary of the City of Salatiga falls on July 24, based on the inscription notes and supported by Regional Regulation No. 15 of 1995.
