SEA ALMS TRADITION

Sea alms is a tradition of the fisherman who lives around the Pantai Utara (North coast) to express gratitude, blessing, and fortune to the sea as the source of their income. This tradition is held for 2 days in Suro month (Javanese calendar). The agenda starts with ancak carnival. On the next day, some buffaloes' heads and goats floated to the sea. The procession of floats follows by some fishing boats.

The floating procession is the main agenda of the sea alms tradition liven up with some local arts named baro-baro dance, srakal, jaipong, and shadow puppet show. Besides showing gratitude, this tradition also becomes a moment for the fisherman to gather with another fisherman because, in their daily routine, they will be busy fishing.
